To the ruins of Trosky Castle

By far the most well-known landmark and also symbol of the Bohemian Paradise is Trosky. This is the ruin of what was originally a Gothic castle from the end of the 14th century. Two towers have been preserved, with the memorable names of the Maiden and the Crone. That high up (57 or 47 m) they provide visitors with some wonderful views of the surrounding landscape – in good weather the Krkonoše and Jizera Mountains can be seen from there.
As Trosky was built on two steep (volcanic) rocks, it was virtually impregnable. Not even the Hussites managed to storm it. Defenders could also survive a long siege, as the castle had its own well and ingenious cavities were carved out of the rock of the Maiden tower to catch rainwater.
